A cataract is a clouding that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye, varying in degree from slight to complete opacity and obstructing the passage of light. Early in the development of age-related cataract, the power of the lens may be increased, causing near-sightedness (myopia), and the gradual yellowing and opacification of the lens may reduce the perception of blue colors. Cataracts typically progress slowly to cause vision loss, and are potentially blinding if untreated. The condition usually affects both eyes, but almost always one eye is affected earlier than the other.

Last summer I began to lose vision in both eyes. Soon I was having trouble reading and driving, especially at night. I thought I must have some terrible eye disease. The doctor removed my cataracts and now I can not only read again, I’m back on the road, visiting my family in downstate Michigan and Virginia.
I was back playing professional music within a week. I’d tell everybody to have cataract surgery. Don’t put up with poor vision because if you could see well when you were 30 or 40, you could see that well again.
